Best Mushroom Coffee That Actually Tastes Good

Mushroom coffee is a great way to deliver something perhaps not-so-desirable in a way that’s much more palatable—kind of like sending Michael B. Jordan to deliver an eviction notice. Personally, I love mushrooms, but I’m not a coffee-drinker. You could say I’m not like other girls. But I’m all for promoting love of the ‘shroom, and I like the idea of coffee, so I was happy to taste test a bunch of mushroom coffees in search of the best mushroom coffee.

The claims behind mushroom coffee include better sleep, increased energy (without the caffeine crash because mushroom coffee is generally lower in caffeine), improved focus, and reduced inflammation. I will not be speaking to any of those points. Not because I don’t believe they could be possible, but it’s unfair to ask a few sips of mushroom coffee to combat the horrors of everyday life and decades of self-inflicted brain rot. So, I evaluated a bunch of mushroom coffee brands on taste and overall satisfaction.

I prepared each mushroom coffee according to package instructions and did not add any milk or sugar. My kitchen smells like a Starbucks truck drove straight into the gardening section of a Home Depot. But I have answers to the question, “What is the best mushroom coffee?” Here’s the official Sporked ranking of the best mushroom coffee aka the best mushroom coffee brands that taste the least like dirt.

Shroom DNA Clarity

Best Instant

Shroom DNA Clarity

Although this instant mushroom coffee (made with chaga and lion’s mane mushrooms) smelled worryingly like mushrooms and not like coffee before preparation, it ended up being the instant mushroom coffee with the most coffee flavor. For how strongly the mushrooms come through in the aroma, they don’t have a particularly overpowering flavor. Instead, they add a little intrigue of bitterness past what a normal coffee would have. Sold in pre-portioned packs that you simply combine with hot water, this is the best instant mushroom coffee for those who want a plain cup of coffee with the benefits of mushrooms, and they want it fast.

Lifeboost French Vanilla Cognition Mushrooms + Coffee

Best Ground Coffee

Lifeboost French Vanilla Cognition Mushrooms + Coffee

This flavored, ground mushroom coffee made with chaga and lion’s mane mushrooms has an absolutely lovely aroma. Something about the combination of the sweet vanilla, funky mushrooms, and roasty coffee has this brand smelling like an old school chocolate protein bar. I know that doesn’t sound like the best pitch, but I have a soft spot in my heart for the good-bad PowerBars of my upbringing. When brewed, the aroma took me right back to the coffee bar at my favorite convenience store (shoutout Wawa even though I know you’re so much more than a convenience store). I missed a lot of the vanilla notes in the actual flavor, but I also lost a lot of the mushroom. All told, it drinks pretty smooth and it’s the best mushroom coffee if you’re looking for a cozy cup of gently flavored java.

Teatree Mushroom Coffee

Best Low Caffeine

Teatree Mushroom Coffee

This mushroom “coffee” is low caffeine because it contains 98% mushrooms (ten different kinds including lion’s mane, reishi, chaga, and shiitake) and only 2% coffee. As such, it seems like it really should be an add-in to other things—the bag even says to put it in things like smoothies, teas, or coffees. So, I’m docking points for misdirection (it’s barely coffee)—but rewarding those points back because I like the freedom of being able to add it to anything. I tried it in coffee and it surprisingly does not smell like mushrooms. Instead, it adds just a hint of extra bitterness to the finish. It’s the best mushroom coffee if you’re really just interested in mushrooms.

Om Superfood Mushroom Blend

Best of the Best

Om Superfood Mushroom Blend (Coffee Latte)

I’m biased because I have a sweet tooth and my idea of “coffee” is dessert that smells like coffee and tastes like sugar. So, I enjoyed this instant mushroom latte, which includes lion’s mane and cordyceps mushrooms, along with powdered milk and sugar. Upon opening it up, the smell was more like cocoa powder than coffee or mushrooms. But unlike the Lifeboost French Vanilla mushroom coffee, the sweetness in the aroma carries over to the taste. Made with coconut sugar and oat milk, it isn’t as rich and luxurious as real milk would have made it, but it is certainly tastier than the plain options I tried. I will warn that it doesn’t look especially appetizing due to the whole “oat milk resembling grey water” thing, and it does get a little more bitter as it sits. Still, it’s the best tasting mushroom coffee, especially if you don’t really want your mushroom coffee to taste like mushrooms (or coffee, for that matter).
