Well, my dudes, it’s officially the dead of winter. The air outside has a chilly bite to it and, as luck would have it, so do these new cheeses from Sargento. Er, I guess the cheese has more of a chili bite to it. What I’m trying to say, is that Sargento is bringing us some spicy shredded cheese. But it’s not just generic spice, no no. Our girl Sargento is anything but basic and, as such, is releasing three varieties of spicy shreds: Frank’s Red Hot, Cholula, and McCormick Crushed Red Pepper. The trifecta. The holy trinity of “let’s add spicy to something once it is already on the table.” The three not-too-spicy spicy hot sauces and spices of the apocalypse. I have so many questions.
How spicy are these Sargento shreds? If I put that Cholula cheese in an omelet, will I have achieved nirvana?
First let’s talk flavors, because each spicy component is paired with a different cheese base. The Frank’s Red Hot shreds are described on the packaging as “Cheddar, Colby Jack, and American Shredded Cheeses with Cayenne Pepper Seasoning,” the Cholula shreds are described as “Queso Quesadilla & Asadero Shredded Cheeses with Hot Sauce Seasonings,” an lastly the Crushed Red Pepper shreds are “Mozzarella & Parmesan Shredded Cheeses with Naturally flavored Crushed Red Pepper flakes.”
It seems Frank’s-infused cheese is aimed at American food—sandwiches, buffalo dip, etc. The Cholula cheese would be amazing with Mexican food, or in an omelet, or in some mac and cheese. And the McCormick red pepper cheese will positively slap with any sort of pizza, pasta, or garlic bread situation. They really thought of everything over there at Sargento. As for how spicy these are, it’s tough to say. When food Instagrammer @Candyhunting posted about the new cheeses, one commenter who purports to have tried the cheeses said they’re a notch spicier than pepper jack but not anything crazy, and if that’s true, that feels about right for a spicy cheese product.
Not willing to take a random Instagram commenter’s word for it? Well, the good news is these three new spicy Sargento cheeses are already available in stores. Will a Cholula cheese omelet be the omelet to end all omelets? Only time will tell. But Cholula and eggs go together like…well…me and the combo of Cholula and eggs, so suffice it to say, I have more than a shred of excitement for this stuff. Now we just have to try them to see if they succeed in spicing up all our cheesy needs.
