The Best Truffle Oil (Both Black and White!)

Truffle oil is devisive—and for good reason. If you use the wrong truffle oil, it can make food taste like straight up acrid chemicals. But if you use the best truffle oil, you can infuse your dishes with warm, umami, earthy, heady flavors of actual truffle.

It can feel like a gamble—and not a cheap one. So, we took the guesswork out of it and tasted 10 different truffle oils (including Truff truffle oil, of course) in search of the best truffle oils that are worth your coin. I tasted all of these oils both straight off the spoon and on bread. It was an eye-opening experience. There are some really, really bad truffle oils out there! Like, truffle pigs would be offended if you tried to pass this stuff off on them as the real deal.

But there are three brands out there making really good truffle oil. Here’s the best truffle oil to buy—both black truffle oil and white truffle oil. And here are the best frozen fries, too. Because we all know that’s where you’re gonna use this stuff first.

Da Rosario Organic White Truffle Oil

Best Mini Bottle

Da Rosario Organic White Truffle Oil

If you’re not committed to a full, big ol’ bottle of truffle oil, this is the best truffle oil to buy. Because it’s small (just 1.76oz) and it’s good. It’s not quite as good as the best white truffle oil on this list, but it comes pretty close. It has that super aromatic truffle flavor. But the flavor is light and gentle. And, most importantly, it doesn’t end on a bitter note. So many of the truffle oils we tried tasted like bitter chemicals. No wonder so many people have a truffle oil aversion.

California Olive Ranch Black Truffle

Best Black Truffle Oil

California Olive Ranch Black Truffle

California Ranch, maker of some of the best olive oil, makes the best black truffle oil we tasted. It’s rich and earthy and aromatic. And it comes in a handy dandy squeeze bottle! This is the best truffle oil if you prefer the slightly milder flavor of black truffle to white truffle. And it’s also the best truffle oil for fries, salad dressing, or other squeeze bottle-friendly recipes.

Truff White Truffle Infused Olive Oil

Best of the Best

Truff White Truffle Infused Olive Oil

Truff Truffle Oil isn’t just the trendiest, most on your Instagram-est truffle oil, it’s also the best truffle oil. And, yes, you should spring for the white truffle oil over the black truffle oil. It really is that much better. It’s made with real truffle and you can really taste that. It has a much more natural, seamlessly infused vibe than most of the others. And the oil itself is good and richly flavorful. A lot of truffle oils can stick in your mouth, leaving you only tasting faux truffle, but Truff’s aftertaste is more of a sensation of truffle rather than flavor. Plus, the bottle looks great—like some 1980s perfume worn by Kathleen Turner. If you’re looking for a gift or just want to treat yourself to a little sprinkle of fancy umami, Truff Truffle Oil is the way to go.
