I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: The flavor scientists at Reese’s are the hardest-working innovators in the game. Sure enough, there’s yet another new Reese’s Peanut Butter Cup flavor variant hitting shelves right now: Chocolate Lava Big Cups. I love chocolate lava cakes—even the ever-sloppy ones from Domino’s. But a chocolate lava Reese’s? It’s an interesting choice since, well, it isn’t actually a new flavor. They’re just adding a different kind of chocolate to the classic chocolate-peanut butter combination.
Per the picture on the packaging, it appears they’ve replaced the bottom fourth of the peanut butter center with a layer of chocolate lava-esque goo. This is the same format found in the very well-received Caramel Big Cup, released late last year. Will this layer of mysterious chocolate ooze live up to my sky-high expectations? Pros: These new Reese’s Cups delivered above and beyond what I was expecting. My problem with normal Reese’s Big Cups is that they skew the chocolate-to-peanut-butter ratio too heavily towards peanut butter. (As someone who’s hoping to rank all seven sizes of Reese’s Cup here on Sporked, I have lots of opinions on how important that ratio is.) The chocolate lava layer balances the Big Cup back to something closer to standard Reese’s while adding a wildly different texture. I was worried that the consistency of the chocolate lava would be too solid, but it truly oozed out of the cup. Despite not adding a new flavor to the equation, this was definitely a new Reese’s experience.
Cons: Reese’s rarely offers their fillings in sizes beyond Big Cups, but I’d love to try this concept in regular Reese’s Cups (or even miniatures, the best size). I doubt the serving size math supports this at all, but a single Big Cup somehow feels like more candy than two regular-sized Reese’s Cups. With how rich the chocolate lava is, I couldn’t imagine eating more than one of these in a single sitting.
