We Still Don’t Know the Flavor of New Monster Ultra Blue Hawaiian, Even After Tasting It

Our long national nightmare is finally over, y’all: The newest zero sugar Monster Energy flavor is here. Welcome to the team, Monster Ultra Blue Hawaiian Energy.

It’s been almost four months since we last got our hands on a brand new Monster Ultra flavor. I’m anxious to see how this one compares to the last two years of Monster Energy flavor innovation. Will this live up to the very solid Ultra Fantasy Ruby Red? Or will this be another passing-grade Ultra Vice Guava? One thing’s for sure, Ultra Blue Hawaiian is going to have to work to dethrone my #1, S-tier, G.O.A.T. Monster Energy flavor: Ultra Strawberry Dreams, accept no substitutes.

When this flavor first leaked online a few months ago, I wished upon a star that Ultra Blue Hawaiian would be Monster’s version of the Mountain Dew Infinite Swirl flavor aka Pineapple Berry. That blend of pineapple and strawberry(?) is spectacular.

But, per Monster Energy’s website, the official flavor of this new Monster flavor is “Light & Easy-Drinking Tropical Blend.” That’s not very helpful. The full description mentions “a killer combo of exotic Polynesian fruit flavors.” That’s also not very helpful! There’s a whole list of fruits native to Hawai’i and exactly zero of them are pictured on the can design itself. It seems like the only way to figure out what this tastes like is gonna be tasting it. Read on for the full review.

New Monster Flavor!

Monster Ultra Blue Hawaiian Energy

Pros: Well, this new Monster flavor is certainly pineapple-ish. I’m one of the rare people who liked Monster’s previous pineapple flavor, Ultra Gold. Ultra Gold got regular complaints for being too strong and borderline painful to drink. As someone who’ll happily drink straight pineapple juice, I understand my tolerance for that pure pineapple power is a little higher than most. Ultra Blue Hawaiian is definitely a softer take on pineapple. As with most Monster Ultra flavors, the blend of alternative sweeteners is very impressive; multiple taste testers didn’t realize this was sugar free at first sip.

Cons: I had half a dozen people try this drink and no one could confidently land on the precise flavor. Pretty much everyone agrees it’s mostly pineapple, but what else? Coconut? Blue raspberry? Mango? That confusion led most of my fellow taste testers to come to the same conclusion: It’s fine. It’s no one’s new favorite (or even close to it), but no one was actively offended by the taste. Sometimes, things are just okay. If every at-bat was a home run, we’d stop watching the game.
